7 Klaviyo BFCM Segments for Shopify: Rules, Exclusions and a Send Plan

Shopify retention playbook · BFCM 2026

A Black Friday email list is not one audience. A subscriber who has never ordered needs a different reason to buy from a loyal customer, a recent purchaser or someone who already has a product in their cart. Sending the same discount to all four can waste margin and make the customer experience feel disconnected.

The purpose of Klaviyo BFCM segments is to decide who should receive which message, who should be excluded and what should happen after a purchase. The seven recipes below give Shopify teams a practical starting point, followed by a send plan and a way to manage overlaps.

The quick answer Build BFCM audiences around engaged non-buyers, first-time customers, repeat customers, VIPs, category interest, lapsed buyers and recent checkout activity. Apply email subscription eligibility to every audience. Then use campaign exclusions, purchase-based exits and coordinated flow timing so the same person does not receive competing offers. Treat the example time windows as starting points to adjust to your buying cycle.

Before You Build: Check Consent, Events and Offers

Start with a small set of working inputs. Confirm that Shopify orders are appearing in Klaviyo, that the products and values look correct and that the onsite events you intend to use are actually arriving. A missing product-view event can make an interested shopper look inactive.

Subscription eligibility For these promotional recipes, use the email-marketing eligibility condition with the additional filter that the person subscribed. Being able to receive an email is not, by itself, the same as having explicitly subscribed.
Order history Check Placed Order events against real Shopify orders. Be consistent about how refunds, cancellations and repeat purchases affect your customer tiers.
Behavioral tracking Verify Viewed Product, Active on Site and checkout events before building audiences around them. Untracked browsing is unknown activity, rather than proof of no interest.
Offer boundaries Decide which products qualify, whether discounts combine, when the offer ends and whether recent purchasers need a different message.

Klaviyo’s segment conditions reference explains channel eligibility and its subscription filter. Its Shopify onsite tracking guide explains the events available through the integration and app embed. Validate a few real profiles before scheduling campaigns.

How to read the recipes: Every segment below starts with eligible to receive email marketing because the person subscribed. The remaining rules are business logic to reproduce in your account, not text to paste into a code editor. Group OR alternatives together and keep subscription eligibility connected with AND.

7 Klaviyo BFCM Segments to Build

1. Engaged Subscribers Who Have Never Purchased

This audience has shown interest but has not experienced the product. Their main obstacle may be uncertainty about fit, shipping, quality or whether the brand is trustworthy. A discount can help, but it should accompany an answer to that obstacle.

Example rule: Email subscriber AND Placed Order equals zero over all time AND either clicked an email in the last 90 days OR was active onsite in the last 30 days.

Send: A curated introduction to bestsellers, useful product proof and a clear first-purchase offer. Keep the destination focused on the products featured in the email.

Exclude: Recent checkout starters when an abandonment flow already owns the conversation. Add a separate welcome treatment for brand-new subscribers so people without engagement history are not automatically overlooked.

2. First-Time Customers Ready for a Second Purchase

A first order creates an opportunity to deepen the relationship. The next message should build on what the customer bought, rather than introducing the brand as if they were still a prospect.

Example rule: Email subscriber AND Placed Order equals one over all time AND at least one order in the last 180 days AND zero orders in the last 14 days.

Send: A complementary product, an appropriate replenishment reminder or a bundle that makes sense after the first purchase.

Exclude: Customers awaiting a delayed delivery, where a reliable fulfillment field or maintained exclusion list lets you identify them. Adjust the 14-day buffer for your actual delivery and product-use cycle.

3. Active Repeat Customers

Repeat buyers already know whether the product and service meet their expectations. They often need relevant newness, a useful pairing or a reason to bring their next purchase forward.

Example rule: Email subscriber AND Placed Order at least twice over all time AND at least one order in the last 365 days AND zero orders in the last 14 days.

Send: New arrivals, category-specific recommendations or a repeat-customer bundle with a clear benefit.

Exclude: VIPs if they have a separate early-access campaign. Avoid giving an established customer a “first order” offer they cannot use.

4. VIP Customers

VIP treatment should reflect a relationship, rather than simply a larger coupon. Early access, limited inventory, useful service or a well-chosen gift can be more appropriate than another blanket discount.

Example rule: Email subscriber AND meets your own VIP definition AND either clicked an email in the last 90 days OR placed an order in the last 365 days. For example, use a maintained VIP profile flag based on your store’s customer-value analysis.

Send: An advance preview with clear access instructions and a real advantage that the general launch does not offer.

Exclude: The general announcement if it would repeat the same message immediately afterward. A later reminder can still be relevant if the customer has not purchased.

Choose a threshold from your own store. There is no universal dollar value that makes someone a VIP. A custom VIP flag must be created and maintained by your team; it is not a built-in field every account already has. Predictive customer value is an optional refinement, covered in our Klaviyo predictive segments guide.

5. Subscribers With a Clear Product or Category Interest

Someone researching lighting should not have to scroll through an unrelated assortment to find the relevant offer. Use observed interest to make the email and its destination more specific.

Example rule: Email subscriber AND Viewed Product at least once in the last 30 days, filtered to a selected product group using properties present in your event data AND zero orders in the last seven days.

Send: The relevant collection, a buying guide or a focused comparison with accurate stock and pricing.

Exclude: Recent checkout starters from a generic category broadcast when a more specific recovery message is scheduled. Verify the event’s actual product properties before choosing a category filter; do not assume every Shopify setup exposes identical fields.

6. Lapsed Customers With a Fresh Interest Signal

A previous purchase alone is a weak reason to increase email frequency. A recent click or return to the site provides a better starting point for deciding whether an older customer belongs in a seasonal campaign.

Example rule: Email subscriber AND Placed Order at least once over all time AND zero orders in the last 180 days AND either clicked an email OR was active onsite in the last 60 days.

Send: What has changed since their last order: an improved product, a new collection or a relevant reason to return. Use an incentive only when it fits the economics.

Exclude: Customers already receiving a conflicting winback offer. For long replacement cycles, 180 days may be normal; choose a lapse definition that fits the product.

7. Recent Checkout Starters Who Have Not Ordered

This audience is close to a purchase and needs continuity. Shipping costs, delivery dates, payment questions or a missing product detail may matter more than a new brand story.

Example rule: Email subscriber AND Started Checkout at least once in the last seven days AND Placed Order zero times in the last seven days.

Send: A relevant checkout reminder with accurate offer terms and answers to common objections. Treat this segment as a coordination audience first: an existing abandonment flow may already provide the right message.

Exclude: Purchasers and anyone receiving the same recovery offer through another scheduled message. The seven-day rule is an approximation; it does not prove that every checkout happened after the customer’s last order. Use the abandonment flow’s order-based filters for more precise recovery timing.

Set Exclusions Before You Set the Send Schedule

These segments intentionally overlap. A VIP can browse a category and begin checkout on the same day. Build a priority order for the particular campaign: recent purchase or service issue first, then an owned checkout conversation, then the most relevant customer or interest treatment.

  • Apply subscription eligibility to every promotional audience.
  • Use a recent-purchaser exclusion for repetitive acquisition or deadline messages.
  • Exclude groups receiving a different VIP, category, welcome or winback treatment when the messages conflict.
  • Review active flows alongside campaigns; segment membership alone does not tell you every message someone will receive.
  • Check the expected recipient count and sample profiles after adding exclusions.
  • For scheduled sends, use recipient determination at send time where appropriate so recent purchases can change eligibility.

Klaviyo’s campaign exclusion guide explains how included and excluded groups affect recipients. Its recent-purchaser guide covers purchase-based exclusions and send-time recipient determination.

Smart Sending is a frequency control, not an overlap strategy. It can skip messages inside the configured channel window, but it does not choose the best offer for the customer. Email and SMS windows are separate, and skipped messages are not automatically rescheduled. Review Klaviyo’s Smart Sending guidance before changing settings during a promotion.

A Practical BFCM Send Plan

The plan below is a sequence to adapt, not a requirement to send every row to every person. Use your store’s sale calendar, audience time zones, sending history and available inventory to choose actual dates and frequency.

Stage Priority audience Message Key exclusion or check
7–14 days before launch Engaged subscribers and customers Preview products, explain access and learn category preferences. Exclude inactive contacts from a sudden high-frequency push.
24–48 hours before launch Eligible VIPs Give the promised preview or genuine early access. Avoid an immediate duplicate general announcement.
Launch day Eligible non-buyers, first-time and repeat customers Use the appropriate product story and offer for each group. Check recent purchases, flow conflicts and overlapping treatments.
Mid-sale, if relevant Category-interest and non-purchasing engaged audiences Answer objections and highlight relevant available products. Remove purchasers from repetitive reminders; verify stock.
Final day Relevant eligible non-purchasers State the real offer end time and applicable time zone. Use urgency only when the deadline is genuine.
After purchase Customers who converted Support delivery, product use and the next useful step. Stop acquisition reminders; coordinate with post-purchase flows.

Connect this sequence to the broader operational work in our Black Friday preparation guide. An email plan still depends on stock, delivery promises, a working checkout and a coherent offer.

Measure Purchases and Margin, Then Improve the Rules

Compare revenue per delivered email, order rate, average order value, discount cost, unsubscribes and complaints by treatment. Use open rate as context rather than the only engagement or success measure. Klaviyo’s engaged-subscriber guidance gives a platform starting point; the click and onsite rules here deliberately use additional behavior to shape the audience.

If you want to know whether a treatment added sales, use a suitable randomized comparison or holdout where audience size allows. Attribution reports alone cannot answer that question. Keep the offer, measurement window and eligible population clear, and wait for returns or cancellations when assessing profit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many BFCM segments does a Shopify store need?

Use only as many as you can treat differently. A smaller store can combine some groups and start with engaged non-buyers, customers and recent high-intent visitors. Seven empty or nearly identical segments will not improve the programme.

Should I exclude every recent purchaser?

Exclude them from messages that repeat an offer they already used or create confusion. A relevant product-care message or complementary purchase opportunity can still be useful. The decision depends on the product and purchase timing.

Do these segments require predictive analytics?

No. The recipes use subscription status, observed behavior, order history and your own customer tiers. Predictive analytics can refine a mature programme, but it is not required to build these audiences.

Should I resend every campaign to people who did not open?

No. Missing an open is not a reliable description of purchase intent. Check purchase and click activity, previous message exposure and offer relevance before adding another send.
