Dynamic Search Ads Are Moving to AI Max: What Ecommerce Advertisers Should Do

Google Ads migration guide · August 2026

Dynamic Search Ads were built for a problem ecommerce advertisers still have: keyword lists never cover every relevant search across a changing catalogue. Google used website content to choose a landing page and generate a matching headline.

AI Max keeps that keywordless idea and expands it. It combines landing-page and ad information with broader matching, generated copy, final URL expansion and a new set of controls and reports. Google has announced that eligible campaigns using DSA will begin automatically upgrading in September 2026.

This is not the moment to switch it on and hope. It is the moment to decide which pages, products, queries and conversion signals the system is allowed to learn from.

The quick answerAudit your current DSA structure before the upgrade. Export targets and search terms, fix URL exclusions and tracking templates, verify conversion values, document performance and test AI Max voluntarily where possible. Google says legacy URL controls and historical data will be ported for eligible DSA campaigns, but advertisers still need to review the resulting standard ad groups and enabled AI Max features.

What Google Announced

In April 2026, Google said eligible Search campaigns using Dynamic Search Ads, automatically created assets or the campaign-level broad match setting would automatically upgrade to AI Max beginning in September. New DSA creation will end across Google Ads, Ads Editor and the API as automatic upgrades begin.

For DSA users, dynamic ad groups are expected to become standard ad groups. Google says settings and data will be ported, legacy URL controls preserved, and search term matching, text customization and final URL expansion enabled. Account notifications will arrive before the transition.

Use the notice in your account as the operational source of truth. The rollout applies to eligible campaigns and Google can adjust schedules or account-level availability. Capture the notice and migration date in your change log.

How AI Max Differs From DSA

AreaDynamic Search AdsAI Max for Search
ReachPrimarily website content and dynamic ad targets.Broad, asset-based and landing-page-based search term matching.
CreativeDynamically generated headline with advertiser descriptions.Text customization can generate relevant headlines and descriptions.
Landing pagesDynamic targets and optional page feeds steer eligible URLs.Final URL expansion plus URL inclusions and exclusions choose relevant pages.
ControlsDynamic targets, negatives, page feeds and exclusions.Brand settings, location intent, URL controls and text guidelines, alongside existing Search controls.
ReportingDSA targets, search terms and landing pages.AI Max match type and source, combined search term/headline/URL views, landing-page selection and asset performance.

AI Max is still a Search campaign feature, not a rename of Performance Max. That distinction matters for budgets, structure, reporting and how you compare results.

The Three Core AI Max Features

1. Search term matching

This uses broad match, landing-page content and ad assets to find relevant searches beyond your keyword list. The control sits at ad-group level and is on by default when AI Max is enabled.

2. Text customization

Formerly called automatically created assets, this campaign-level feature uses your ads, assets and landing pages to produce query-relevant copy. Weak or legally sensitive page copy therefore becomes an advertising risk, not only a CRO issue.

3. Final URL expansion

Google can send traffic to a different, query-relevant URL within the domain. It requires text customization. When Google chooses an expanded URL, pinned RSA assets may not be used because they may not match the new page.

What Ecommerce Advertisers Should Do Before Migration

1. Export a clean baseline. Save campaign, ad-group, dynamic target, search term, landing page, negative, asset and conversion performance for at least the last 90 days—and the same seasonal period last year.
2. Map current URL rules. Record page feeds, custom labels, category targets, “URL contains” rules and exclusions. Flag any logic that depends on temporary sale or seasonal URLs.
3. Audit every eligible landing page. Remove thin search pages, account areas, policies, blog posts with no commercial path, out-of-stock dead ends and URLs with broken canonical or tracking behaviour.
4. Fix conversion measurement. Confirm purchase events, values, currency, enhanced conversions, consent settings and primary/secondary goals. Automation will optimize the errors you feed it.
5. Test tracking templates with dynamic URLs. Google warns that incompatible templates can produce broken landing pages. Use {lpurl} correctly and test expanded URLs before scale.
6. Review brand and location controls. Decide which competitor, reseller or own-brand queries should be included or excluded and whether location intent is commercially valid.
7. Prepare complete RSAs. Give the system strong advertiser-written assets before relying on generated variants. Review claims, promotions, capitalization and compliance language.
8. Run a controlled experiment. If the voluntary upgrade and one-click experiment are available, compare like-for-like conversion value, CPA/ROAS, search-term quality and landing-page mix.

How to Set URL Controls for an Ecommerce Site

Final URL expansion is powerful only when the eligible website is clean. Create an explicit inclusion and exclusion policy.

Usually includeIn-stock products, commercially useful collections, high-intent buying guides and localized pages that match campaign geography.
Usually excludeCart, account, internal search, support-only pages, expired promotions, low-stock dead ends, wholesale pages and content with restricted claims.

Use URL exclusions at campaign level and URL inclusions at ad-group level to keep themes coherent. If an ad group is about running shoes, do not let final URL expansion wander into unrelated casual footwear simply because both pages convert.

How to Measure the Upgrade

Do not judge AI Max on total conversions alone. Expansion can find more volume while changing query quality, landing-page mix and margin.

  • Conversion value and profit at a comparable spend level
  • CPA or ROAS against the campaign’s business target
  • New-customer rate and branded versus non-branded contribution
  • Search terms by AI Max match source
  • Landing pages selected by Google and their onsite conversion rate
  • Generated asset performance and policy issues
  • Product margin, returns and stock quality behind the conversions

Google has added AI Max source and match information, a combined search term/headline/URL view, a “Selected by” field in landing-page reporting and asset-level performance. Use them weekly during the transition.

What to Watch in the First Four Weeks

TimingChecksAction threshold
First 48 hours404s, tracking, policy status, excluded URLs, conversion flow.Fix broken pages or measurement immediately.
Week 1Search-term relevance, brand leakage, chosen URLs, generated claims.Add exclusions or refine ad-group themes when mismatches are material.
Weeks 2–3CPA/ROAS, conversion value, product mix and new-customer share.Avoid daily overreaction; investigate sustained deterioration.
Week 4Experiment result, profit, incrementality and operational workload.Scale, refine settings or roll back optional features where the test supports it.

Mistakes That Distort AI Max Performance

Watch for: mixing branded and non-branded demand, changing budgets during the test, optimizing to duplicate purchase actions, comparing against a promotion-free period, leaving the entire site eligible, and celebrating revenue while return rate or margin deteriorates.

Another mistake is comparing AI Max with SEO as if one must replace the other. Paid search captures demand immediately; SEO and strong landing pages improve the material both Google Ads and organic systems can understand. Frequently Asked Questions

When will DSA upgrade to AI Max?

Google’s April 2026 announcement says automatic upgrades for remaining eligible campaigns begin in September 2026, with in-account notification beforehand. Follow the exact notice shown in your account.

Will historical data and URL controls carry over?

Google says settings and data will be ported for DSA users and legacy URL controls preserved. Audit the migrated result rather than assuming every business rule survived exactly as intended.

Is AI Max the same as Performance Max?

No. AI Max is a feature suite for Search campaigns. It expands matching, creative and landing-page selection while retaining Search-campaign structure and controls.

Should we wait for the automatic upgrade?

If voluntary tools are available, a controlled early test gives you more time to learn and correct settings. Do not upgrade blindly; prepare the baseline, URL rules and conversion data first.
